The Netherlands is renowned for its sinology and is also the place where a set of lead matrices of the 1860 “Hong Kong Type” was discovered. In the talk, Seewhy shared her fascinating experiences at local foundries across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, along with her latest work, “Time”, created for the exhibition “Through Time – Print Art in Aberdeen Street”. “Time” employs xingshu script (shown in Annotations on the Gospel of Matthew printed in ‘Hong Kong Type’ in 1868) using the glass and aluminum casting technique, capturing a significant moment in the process of typecasting.
In 2020, artist Ng Cho-yiu (seewhy) apprenticed at the Foundation Type Foundry Westzaan in the Netherlands, where she was part of the team researching the recasting of Hong Kong Type.
In the summer of 2024, Ng cast movable type in a sculptural format using a glass casting technique.
